Getting to Taormina

Taormina perches on a rocky cliff at 200 metres above Sicily's east coast, 55km north of Catania Airport along the A18 motorway. The drive takes 50–60 minutes. Most of the route runs along the coast via the A18 Messina–Catania autostrada — fast and well-signed. The final approach into town involves the climb up the hillside on the SP10 and SS114, with views opening out over the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna to the south.

Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport (PMO) is 250km to the west — about 3.5 hours via the A20 motorway. Use Palermo if your flights work out better there, or if you're combining Taormina with a Palermo stay at the start or end of your trip.

What to See in Taormina

The Greek Theatre (Teatro Antico di Taormina) is the town's centrepiece. Built in the 3rd century BC and expanded by the Romans, the theatre faces directly towards Mount Etna — one of the most theatrical backdrops in the ancient world. Entry costs €12. Summer concerts and the Taormina Film Festival run June–August; book tickets separately if you plan to attend performances.

Piazza IX Aprile is the town's main square and the social heart of the place. The Clock Tower (Torre dell'Orologio) dates from the 15th century. The square edges drop off to views of the Sicilian coastline below. Sit at Bar Mocambo with an Avola almond granita in the morning — the café has been there since 1938.

Isola Bella is a small island 300 metres offshore, reachable by cable car from the town (€3 each way, about 8 minutes). The beach around it is pebble and small, but the water clarity is outstanding. The island itself is a nature reserve — access is limited to the paths around the perimeter.

Castello Saraceno stands at 390 metres above town, a 30-minute steep walk up from Piazza IX Aprile or accessible by road. The ruins are Norman-era on top of Byzantine foundations. Practical Notes

Taormina's historic centre is pedestrianised. Your transfer driver will drop you at the Lumbi car park (free) or the paid Mazzini car park, both a short walk from the Porta Catania gate into town. Hotels with specific addresses will have guidance on the closest drop-off point.

Is Catania the only airport for Taormina?

Catania Fontanarossa (CTA) at 55km is by far the most practical. Palermo (PMO) at 250km is a long drive but workable if your itinerary begins or ends there. There is no airport in Messina. Catania has direct connections from most major European cities, particularly in summer.

How long is the transfer from Catania Airport?

50–60 minutes in normal conditions via the A18 motorway northbound. Saturday afternoon transfers in July and August can add 10–15 minutes on the approach to Taormina. The driver monitors your actual landing time and plans accordingly.

Can I see Mount Etna from Taormina?
